This GIF was a collaborative submission titled Exchange Rate, reflecting on the increase of underpaid internship positions and how young designers are increasingly perceived to embody a lower value. The industry often views young designers as incompetent and inexperienced, taking advantage of and leading them to believe they are a burden to the employer. The exploration of an alternative currency to standard dollars is used to illustrate the inconsistency between determined worth of design by clients versus the designers. Intermittent quotes are sourced from emails and conversations of young designers with prospective or real clients and employers. In a recent interview for a full-time internship position, the prospective employer proposed a salary of $10 per day. This is the point of reference for the exchange rate value of 1:20.
